The 1.5-liter mild-hybrid petrol engine from the Ciaz will continue to power the Toyota Belta. In Toyota's lineup, the rebadged Ciaz will take the place of the Yaris.
We already have the Toyota Glanza and Toyota Urban Cruiser, which are rebadged versions of the Baleno and Vitara Brezza, respectively, thanks to Toyota and Maruti Suzuki’s collaboration. Toyota is also working on a rebadged version of the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, which will be known as the Belta.
Toyota’s Yaris car has been discontinued. While dealers claim the car is still in stock and will be sold for the next several months, the attention will soon turn to the bigger and more cost-effective Toyota Belta. It should be a solid seller for Toyota, much like other Maruti-based Toyotas.
Why Toyota has ruled out its Yaris?
To major factor is the slow-selling Yaris was never a true competitor for the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, or Maruti Ciaz, which all provide better value for money. Because it lacked several key features and was overpriced, the Yaris failed to attract many buyers.
As a result, Yaris sales, which peaked at 871 units this year in March 2021, have struggled to exceed three figures every month.
The Yaris will also be phased out to make room on the production line for Maruti and Toyota’s fighter SUV in front of Hyundai, an SUV on which both firms are betting big.
What to expect from Toyota Belta
We don’t expect any major exterior or interior modifications as part of the package, but the Toyota Belta might get new alloy wheels and variation badges. Midsize cars such as the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Skoda Rapid, and Volkswagen Vento will face stiff competition.
The Ciaz’s existing 1.5-litre four-cylinder K15B mild-hybrid petrol engine will continue with Toyota Belta. It produces 104.7 PS of maximum power at 6,000 rpm and 138 Nm of peak torque at 4,400 rpm under the hood.
It comes standard with a five-speed manual transmission, with a four-speed torque converter automatic transmission available as an option in the Ciaz.
