Now you have to pay a higher cost to renew your vehicle registration after 15 years

From April 1, you'll have to pay an eight-fold higher cost to renew your registration for a 15-year-old automobile or a large truck.

From April 2022, vehicle owners will be required to pay eight times more for the renewal of vehicles older than 15 years.

Similarly, the cost of renewing the fitness certifications for commercial heavy vehicles, such as trucks and buses, will be approximately eight times higher. The road, transport, and roads ministry announced the new regime’s implementation.

This, however, will have no effect on car owners in Delhi and its surrounding regions, where vehicles older than ten years old (diesel) and fifteen years old (petrol) are already prohibited.

According to the announcement, a 15-year-old car’s registration renewal will cost Rs 5,000, up from the existing charge of Rs 600.

If you failing to renew commercial vehicle fitness certifications on time. A daily penalty of Rs 50 would be imposed. The increased registration and fitness certificate renewal fees are intended to discourage individuals from maintaining their outdated automobiles.

When it comes to private cars, the registration must be updated every 5 years after 15 years. Likewise, once a commercial vehicle hits the age of eight years, it is required to renew its certificate of fitness every year.

The price for manual and automated vehicle fitness checks is also specified in the notice. The government wants to get rid of the manual fitness testing method, which may be falsified.

As part of its umbrella voluntary vehicle scrapping plan, the ministry has issued guidelines for the establishment of such test centers.
